Analysis and Maintenance of Common Troubles in BMW

Symptom:
    1. The engine can not start, especially the cold start or at high altitudes, the following symptoms will appear at the same time:
    (1) a long time to fire, the engine is still unable to start;
    (2) the engine started, but when the idle shaking, while the exhaust pipe black smoke;
    (3) spark plug is very wet.
    2. "The engine check (checkengine)" lights, the following symptoms also appear:
    (1) fault code 37 - oxygen sensor heating relay failure;
    (2) fault code 70 or fault code 201 - oxygen sensor failure.
    Applicable models:
    January 1999 to August 1992 produced between the BMWE34, E36 models (all equipped with M50 engine).
    Troubleshooting:
    The M50 engine DME (DigitalMotorElectronic) computer EPROM (editable erasable memory) program update, the use of MODIC and Programming6.0 debris to make the new program input.
    1. Before replacing the EPROM, please check whether there is a fault in the computer memory, if any, please first troubleshooting, and then related work.
    (1) to completely clear the fault code 37, only the replacement EPROM.
    (2) If the fault code 70 or the fault code 201 is still present after the clear code, replace the oxygen sensor.
    2. If the data displayed on the MODIC screen meets one of the following three, enter the program entry as described in the attachment.

    3. To ensure that the cold start, please check the status of the spark plug, if necessary, timely replacement.
    4. Make sure that the engine oil is the original engine oil.
    Work program:
    1. Replace the EPROM according to the procedure shown in the accessory. Please program6.0 program into the MODIC. Before replacing EPROM, please clear the fault in the computer's fault memory.
    2. Once the EPROM has been replaced into the computer and the program input is complete, be sure to start the engine immediately and run at idle for at least 1 minute. If only the ignition switch is placed in the "ON" position, the output of the vehicle DME computer may be burned down.
    3. Do not turn off the ignition during program entry. Open the DME computer and unplug the connector between the MODICs.
